Audrey McKirdy - Conductor
Audrey trained as a music teacher at St Andrew’s College of Education in Bearsden. She was Head of Music at Drumchapel High School, having previously worked in various schools around Glasgow. Audrey then studied post-graduate level singing at the RSAMD (now RCS) graduating with a Masters in Music in Concert Singing.
Audrey grew up singing in the Glasgow Youth Choir with the wonderful Agnes Hoey, and she is honoured to follow in her footsteps, keeping Agnes’s legacy alive. On request of her GYC friends from her time in the choir, Audrey started up our ‘GYC Legacy’ alumni choir in 2023, assisted by Fiona Gibney at the piano. Many ‘well-kent’ faces from over all the decades of the choirs’ existence meet monthly.
She has sung in choirs and vocal ensembles all her life, most recently with the City of Glasgow Chorus,
Audrey became the conductor of the Glasgow Philharmonic Male Voice Choir in 2024, and has led workshops with various other groups.
A high point of her choral career was when she organised the Glasgow Choirs Spectacular, a massed choir concert in the City Hall, celebrating choral music in the city, which had been a dream of hers for many years.
Audrey believes passionately that there is a place for every kind of choir, as long as people are able to enjoy singing together, especially following the pandemic. She is very keen that today’s choir members have the same kind of opportunities she was lucky enough to have when she was a member of the choir herself…
Audrey teaches singing in South Lanarkshire Schools and in Belmont House School.
She has sung professionally in recitals, and as Mezzo-Soprano soloist in many oratorios, around Scotland and Northern England.
