Looking after your voice is very important, whether you’re singing in a choir or solo. Here are our top tips to keep your voice at its best!
1. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your vocal folds in their best condition.
2. Know your trigger foods
Work out which foods affect your voice negatively and avoid them before performances. For some people it’s chocolate, for others it could be spicy food. This varies from person to person, so find what works best for you.
3. Avoid shouting or screaming
This can be difficult when you’re caught up in the moment at concerts or parties, but it can tire or damage your voice. If you do overdo it, rest your voice over the next few days (less talking, no shouting) and stay well hydrated.
4. Be cautious with vocal remedies
Some remedies have numbing properties. While they may make your throat feel better, they can lead to overuse while your vocal folds are still inflamed. If in doubt, speak to a medical professional.
5. Try steaming
If your vocal folds feel tired or dry, steaming can help. Use hot (not boiling) water in a steamer, or fill a bowl or sink, place a towel over your head, and gently breathe in the steam. Avoid adding substances like menthol, as these can be drying.
By building these habits into your routine, you’ll help keep your voice healthy, supported, and ready for every rehearsal and performance.
